Brock University in St Catharines Ontario, have installed Two Tandberg ICM Divace Duo Labs.

The systems are 22 positions, and 28 positions. Each system incorporates the Tandberg Computer Supervisory System (CSS-NET) The student positions use 15" flat screen LCD panels. This gives a great deal of space on the students desks.

Brock University are a long standing customer of Tandberg. Their decision to go with the Tandberg Multimedia language solution, was based on their confidence in a distributor, and a product, which offers innovation and stability.

Brock University’s Centre for Digital Humanities represents the latest stage of progressive growth of what had been known for fifteen years as the Language Learning Centre. Prior to its relocation in 1987, the Language Learning Centre was identified as the Language Laboratories.

In addition to evolving in identity, the Centre has experienced regular progression technologically. Although the “technical/digital divide” between Canadian universities and colleges is narrowing, the Centre has managed to maintain its position of being on the leading edge of technology when compared to other learning laboratories.

The year 1985 marked the beginning of an ongoing working relationship with Thorvin Electronics Inc., and the introduction of Tandberg Language Laboratories at Brock University. It began with the installation of two IS9 language labs, which were enthusiastically welcomed by our foreign language instructors. This was followed shortly by the installation of two IS10 labs. When Tandberg introduced the integration of computers, the Centre was at the front of the line once more when installation of our first round of ‘286’ PCs marked the intersection of digital technologies with language teaching at Brock. Naturally over time the computers themselves would see their own upgrades.

In 2001, two of our four labs were replaced with new furniture, new technology, and a new approach to teaching and learning. The response to the ICM/Divace media labs has been positive, not only from the viewpoint of instructors, but also from the university community as a whole. With the labs being used for both training workshops and teaching, students and instructors alike have provided encouraging and constructive feedback.

Although there are still some features of the software to be learned and integrated into the curriculum, our instructors and students, are now enjoying a new comfort level with the technology, and are thrilled with the advancements made. The instructors are excited by the new approaches to their teaching that the technology of the new labs has made available to them.
